Museum in Frenštát pod RadhoštěmWith its founding in 1884, the Radhošť Mountain Union in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm laid the foundation for Czech organized tourism. Through its long efforts in the founding years, the Union created particularly on Pustevny in the Radhošť Beskydies a tourist region made accessible by marked trails and paths. With its characteristic buildings and the nearby Radhošť with its chapel and monumental sculptures of Cyril and Methodius and the statue of Radgast by the sculptor Albín Polášek, Pustevny is a sought-after destination of numerous visitors to the Beskydies. The ideas of the Radhošť Mountain Union, with whose existence the efforts to create a national consciousness and to promote the intellectural and economic life of the region are also connected, found adherents in the local organs in numerous towns in Bohemia and Moravia.
The postwar development of the Union was violently terminated by the expropriation in 1948 and the demise of the organization’s activity in 1950. The Radhošť Mountain Union renewed its activity in 1990. The beginnings of the sport of skiing in the Beskydies are connected with the existence of the Radhošť Mountain Union. The history of sport in the area is supplemented by information on the founding and activity of the Sokol Gymnastic Association and of other althletic organizations. Documentary material and three-dimensional objects are presented. For example, skis, bob-sleds, building models, posters, prints, photographs, postcards, insignia, cups, diplomas, the RMU banner, trophies of skiiers and of the Olympic champion Jiří Raška etc.
A part of the exposition is dedicated to Frenštát’s natural scenery.
